Elopement Ceremony (Standard Wedding) License Required
Handfasting Ceremony (Matrimonial Only) License Required

Handfasting Certificates are issued by the Officiant, and are presented to the couple the day of the ceremony.
Marriage Certificates are issued by the County Clerk's office, and are mailed to the couple within a few weeks.
PLEASE NOTICE:  A valid marriage license issued by any county clerk in Kentucky must be presented to the officiant before a Matrimonial (Legal) Handfasting Ceremony can take place.

The license is filled out by the officiant on the day of the wedding, before the ceremony, and takes about 15 minutes to complete. The names of the witnesses are added to the license by the officiant, so they must be 18 years of age or older, and have proper identification with them.

When the license is filled out completely, the officiant will sign it, remove the bottom portion of the license, and give it to you as your proof of marriage until the actual Marriage Certificate is mailed to you by the County Clerk. The top portion of the license must be mailed to the Jefferson County Clerk's office immediately.

The officiant can do this for you as a courtesy.  Just make the request when the bottom portion of the license is given to you. If you choose to mail the license yourself, send it to the address below.
